Radiant floor heating systems supply heat directly to the floor in your Vienna, Chantilly, or Centreville home. More efficient than baseboard heating and forced-air heating, radiant floor heating transfers heat directly to the space and its occupants, rather than losing energy through ducts. What's more, radiant floor systems allow even heating throughout the whole floor and eliminates draft and dust problems associated with other heating systems. Radiant floor systems are invisible to the room, as the mechanisms are buried underneath ceramic, tile, stone, or wood flooring.
There are three types of radiant floor heat, which include air-heated, electric, and hydronic radiant floors. Air-heated radiant floors are seldom installed in homes, as this type of heating is carried by air and is therefore not very cost effective. Air-heated radiant systems can be combined with solar air heating systems but then must be augmented with a conventional heating system after the sun goes down.
Electric radiant floors consist of electric cables built into the floor and can therefore be expensive to run off of electricity. This type of radiant system can be cost effective if they are underneath a thick thermal mass, such as a concrete floor, so heat can be stored within the floor without additional electrical input. This type of radiant flooring is ideal for home additions without an extension of the original home's heating system.
Lastly, hydronic radiant floors operate by pumping heated water from a boiler through tubing underneath the floor. As the most popular and cost effective floor radiant heating system, hydronic heating can be controlled via a system of zoning valves or pumps and thermostats.
