How to Prevent Clogged Drains in Your Northern Virginia Home

Clogged drains in your bathtub, bathroom sink, or kitchen sink, are not only a nuisance, but can also be an expensive plumbing problem to repair. Clogged drains can be prevented by following a number of tips and simple procedures on a regular basis. Methods to prevent clogged drains include:

  • Clean stoppers on a regular basis. Remove the stoppers and wash and rinse them thoroughly, as stoppers can hold large amounts of loose hair.
  • Install strainers over bathroom drains to prevent soap and hair from getting into the pipes.
  • Install strainers over kitchen drains to prevent food from getting into the pipes.
  • Look out for drains that are funning slowly and remove buildup before it becomes more of a problem.
  • Never pour cooking grease down your drains, as grease settles along the sides of pipes and traps other discarded food.
  • Run boiling water down your drains periodically to dissolve hair and other debris.
