How to Prevent Pipe Corrosion

Understanding how to prevent pipe corrosion can save your family expensive plumbing service repairs, time, and frustration. Corroded, rusty pipes can lead to a number of plumbing service needs, such as congested drains, fractured pipes, and leaks. What's more, rusty pipes can transform water passing through them to be overly acidic, undrinkable, and possess a rusty brown shade. Preventing corrosion now is better than replacing your entire pipe system later.

Corrosion results from a material wearing away and dissolving because of its interaction with certain elements, such as bits of rust or minerals. To prevent corrosion:

• Inspect your pipes for signs of discoloration or wear.
• Test your water for pH balance. Low pH numbers indicate highly acidic water, which is an indication of corrosion.
• Have your pipes inspected to make sure they have been properly grounded, as improperly grounded pipes is a major cause of pipe corrosion.
• Regularly flush your pipes to prevent buildup of sand, sediment, or other grit.
