Home HVAC Inspection

How to do you own air conditioning check up

Spring has finally arrived. The Washington DC/Baltimore metropolitan area is gearing up for warmer weather. Many Northern Virginia and Maryland residence are preparing for the warmer months by scheduling air conditioner tune-ups. Though it may seem somewhat early in the season to perform such a task, in reality now is the best time. Performing an inspection and tune-up now will ensure proper performance when the sultry months arrive.

Interferences with the air passages throughout the unit are the primary cause of concern. Harvey W. Hottel, Inc. recommends that you unplug your air-conditioner and vacuum the front grille and any accessible components. Follow through with a thorough wipe down to rid your system and its exterior components of any surface dust.

Next, it is imperative that you check your HVAC air filter. Dirty air filters are the common cause of system inefficiency. Before removing the filter, take note of how the filter is installed. Some filters must face a certain direction in order to effectively do their job. To clean a filter, soak the screen in a soapy water solution. Let the filter dry before reinstallation. Harvey W. Hottel, Inc. recommends that you purchase new filters instead of washing and reusing.

While the filter is removed from your HVAC unit, examine the slot and make sure it is thoroughly cleaned. Warm air passes through this area of the unit and is cooled by small fins. Dust and debris not trapped by the filter has the ability to collect on the cooling apparatus and affect the overall temperature of the air that is being processed. This area can be cleaned using a combination of a vacuum and damp rag.

If your HVAC unit has not been inspected in recent seasons or if you do not feel comfortable performing an inspection, contact Harvey W. Hottel, Inc. today.
