Ever wonder how your air conditioner works? Every air conditioner has three main parts, which include a condenser, evaporator, and compressor. In a typical split system air conditioner, the condenser and compressor are located in the outdoor unit, while the evaporator is mounted in the indoor air handling unit.
The unIt's compressor is an electric pump that circulates refrigerant in a loop between the condenser and evaporator. The outdoor condenser coils are a network of tubes filled with refrigerant that remove heat, which then escapes into the outdoor air. The indoor evaporator coils consists of a network of tubes also filled with refrigerant that removes heat and moisture from the air as the refrigerant evaporates into a gas.
When your thermostat signals the air conditioning system to kick on, the air handling unit starts and draws air in from various parts of the house through ducts. The air is pulled in through a filter, removing airborne dust particles. Using compressed gas refrigerant, cool air is routed to other ductwork and carried back into the rooms. The cycle keeps running while the air conditioner is on.
