On average, heating and cooling costs can make up about half of a home's total energy bill. To save energy and money, replace your current central air conditioner with an ENERGY STAR qualified model. ENERGY STAR models meet strict energy efficiency guidelines as set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. All central air conditioners are given a seasonal efficiency rating (SEER); SEER indicates the relative amount of energy needed to provide a cooling output. ENERGY STAR models have a higher SEER rating than standard models, making them about 15 percent more efficient than standard models.
As of January 2006, air conditioners manufactured after January 2006 must have a SEER of 13 or higher, up from the previous minimum SEER of 10. Equipment with a rating of less than SEER 13 manufactured before this date may still be sold and installed, while homeowners with an existing central air conditioning unit with a SEER lower than 13 are not required to change their system.
Central air conditioners have an average lifespan of 15 to 20 years. Purchasing an ENERGY STAR system may upfront be more expensive than purchasing a traditional model, but the cost difference is paid back over time with lower energy bills. Choosing ENERGY STAR central air conditioners not only optimizes your energy use, it also helps promote cleaner air. What's more, if purchased and installed before December 31, 2010, ENERGY STAR central air conditioners may qualify for a tax credit for 30 percent of the cost, up to $1,500.
